Little Valley Limestone (overview) (Carboniferous of the United States)

Where: Washington County, Virginia (36.8° N, 82.3° W: paleocoordinates 19.9° S, 30.6° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Little Valley Formation, Meramecian (343.0 - 335.5 Ma)

• On Geolex page, Little Valley was assigned as member of the Greenbrier Fm. by Nolde, 1994, and listed as Meramecian age. The Greenbrier is assigned to the Meramecian - Chesterian age, thus I decided that the Little Valley is probably Late Meramec (= Holkerian - Asbian).

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; lithified, ooidal, argillaceous, sandy, cherty/siliceous limestone and shale

• includes mainly argillaceous limestone with some shale and minor sandstone. limestone is gray, argillaceous, medium to thick bedded, cherty. some oolitic limestone present at base. cherty limestone contains bedded rows of gray, irregular, chert nodules. the shale is dark gray-black-brown, mostly fissile and fossiliferous. principally confined to 2 units in upper third of formation. 1-3 beds of light grayish brown med-bedded fine grained calcareous sandstone.
